“Before I came to the United Kingdom in 1960, we had this image in our mind of glamour, the stuff you see on tv. But when I came, that stuff that you have now there was none. There was no colour tv, no carpets, central heating and if you get too cold you go to bed early. We use to go wherever there was work, it was very very hard compared to now. But let me tell you, we were the lucky ones. When I arrived, the generation before me were still there and they have seen real hardship for they witnessed the Great Depression, many of them used to sleep on the street. They told me that they buried 6 Somalis who died of starvation.”

“Waxaan so galay Midowga Boqortooyada Britan 1960, waxaan moodayey beriga hore tos yaro filimo aan daawanjirnay, waxaa noo muuqday qurux aan yaabi jirnay. Markaan imid, waxay noqotay meel wada gaajo ah. Iminka tv-ga midabka leh, rooga, kuleylka dhexe ma jirin. Shaqo meesha ee taalo u ka lihi jirnay. Nolosha wey adkeyd. Laakin aniga waxaa ka mid ahaa kuwa ugu nasiibka badana. Markii aan imid, jiilka naga horeeyey waxay la kulmeen silic iyo rafaad. Waxay so mareen waxay Ingiriiska u yaqiineen “Great Depression”. Dariiqa la seexan jiray. Goob baa jirta ee ku aasan yihin 6 ka mid ah dadka Soomaaliyeed oo gaajo darteed ugu geeriyooyday.”
