My family and I tried to move permanently to Somalia in 2003

“My family and I tried to move permanently to Somalia in 2003. We built our house in Gubta neighbourhood in the Daynile district (Mogadishu). We had high hopes and the thought of moving back to your homeland land was amazingly exciting. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. We had to move back to the UK after a mere month because of high insecurity back then. Now the security is much better. One thing I managed to get out of it was an acquired skill of commando crawling. When militias of various warlords used to battle on the streets near our house, we used to crawl like soldiers on battlegrounds for fear that stray bullets might hit you. It was a survival tactic. Every time I remember Somalia, I remember the commando crawling. Nevertheless, I still want to go back so bad.”

“Aniga iyo qoyskaygu waxaan isku daynay in aanu si rasmi ah ugu guurno Soomaaliya sanadkii 2003. Waxaanu guri ka dhisanay xaafada Gubta ee degmada Dayniile (Muqdisho). Rajo iyo hami weyn baa nagu jiray wakhtigaa. Nasiib-darro, muddo kooban baanu joognay. Hal bil kadib, waxaan dib ugu soo guurnay waddanka Ingiriiska madaame amniga aad u liitay. Inkastoo amniga hadda u yahay mid roon, berigaas ammaanka ma wacnayn. Hal xirfad baa igu so kordhay muddadi yarayd aan joogay. Waxaan bartay sidee askarta u gurguurtan. Waayo, markii maleeshiyada hogaamiye kooxeedyadii ku dagaalami jireen wadooyinka gurigeena ku agdhowa, waan gurguuri jirnay aniga iyo qoyskeyga – si aan ka badbaadno rasaas wiifto ah oo meel kasta ku dhacaysay. Markaan Soomaaliya soo xasuusto, waxaan xasuusta sidaan u gurguuran jirnay si aan uga badbaadno xabada soo dhacaysay. Waxaan rabaa inaan ku laabto mustaqbalka insha’Allah.”
