The US has always provided us with a sense of love and welcoming, and we generally feel safe here

“The US has always provided us with a sense of love and welcoming, and we generally feel safe here, but the last few years has been a little more difficult with anti-Muslimism rhetoric spewing from politicians of our country and trickles down do our ordinary citizens. Sometimes we hear ignorant comments from people, but for the most part, Seattle has a great and decent population that is diverse. Even though many people are educated, liberal, and well-travelled in this region and throughout the country, it does not mean that they know a lot about Islam and are used to the stereotypes they hear. So it’s great to be able to educate people about our basic beliefs. It empowers all of us. So we came with a platform called Eat With Muslims. The response has been powerful and exciting. Our guests often express that they have learned more about Islam and have some of the myths they’ve heard addressed. They usually come away with making new friends, engaging in more dinners and volunteer together. Building friendships is a great way to rid prejudice and bias, and we try to break these barriers down merely through talking over delicious foods.  There have been challenges; for instance, it was harder to get a lot of Muslims to attend because some didn’t feel that they needed to justify their humanity. However, over time people realised that these were social gatherings and opportunities to get to know new people. Now we have Muslims from all walks of life come to our dinners, and they walk away feeling like they engaged in great conversation, were able to help people become more informed on Islam directly, and made new connections and understanding for themselves as well.”

“Marakanku markasta wuxuu noo muujiyey jacayl guud iyo soo dhawayn, si guudna waxaanu u darena amaan ama nabad, laakiin dhawrkii sanno ugu danbeeyey xooga waa nagu yara adkayd waxyaabo dhan ka ah muslimiinta oo ka imanayey qaar ka mid ah siyaasiyiinta dalka. Marmar waxaanu maqalna hadalo  ka soo baxaya kuwo aan aqoon lahayn, laakiin inta badan magaalada Seattle waxaa degan dadyow kala duwan inkasto dad badan yihiin kuwo waxbartay, dhexdhexaad ah, gobolkan iyo guud ahaan dalka oo dhan safaro ku taga, taas macnaheedu ma aha in wax badan ka yaqanaan Islaam-ka waxayna u haystaan uun waxyaabo ay maqlaan. Sidaas darteed waa mid haboon in la baro dadka waxyabaaha asaasig ah ee aanu aaminsahay, waana mid dhamaanteen na dhiiri gelinaysa, si aanu taas u gaadhno waxaanu asaasnay madal lagu magacaabo ‘La cun Mislimiinta’. Ilaa markii aanu bilownay ilaa hada waxaan helayna jawaabo aad u wacan, martidii aanu casuunay ay ku cabireen waxyaabihii ay barteen isla markaana ay dib uga falceliyeen waxyaabo ay hore u maqleen. Si mutadacnimo ah way nagala soo qaybgalaan xiliga cashada fikiro kala duwan  la is dhaafsada asaxaab cusubna waa ku kulmaan madasha. Iskaashi saaxiibtinimo waa fursad aad u wayn hadana lagaga hortagi karo faquuqa iyo cunsuriyada waana mid si fudud meesha uga saari karta caqabadahaas jiray. In la sheekaysto iyadoo cunto aad u macan la cunayo, waxaa jira caqabado taas dhinac socda,  marmar waa adkayd in la helo muslimiin badan kasoo qaybgasha sababto ah kuwo badan u arkayey in aysan muhiim ahayn in dadnimadooda ka hadlaan. Si kastaba ha noqot’e wakhti ka dib dadkii way ogadeen in tani tahay bulsho isu timid, fursad aad dad cusub ku baratana noqon karta. Iminka waxaa nagala soo qaybgala cashada aanu samayno Muslimiin badan  ka tirsan qaybaha kala duwan bulshada, markasta waxay noqdaan iyagoo dareemaya in ay heleen fursad ay isku dhaafsadaan fikrado iyo wada sheekaysi waxaanu doonayna in dadku is fahmaan waxna ka bartaan Islaamka si ay dhexdoodana isku fahmaan.”
